Depotting Lipsticks
Topic: As a Makeup Artist

Every so often I go on a depotting spree and last night was one of those times. Up for depotting this week were a few stray lipsticks.

First I started with a few basic supplies:

A candle, empty pans, an uber large ladle, a lighter, lipsticks, alcohol and towels.

I cleaned everything with 99% alcohol and rested the ladle over the burning candle.  Once hot, I cut off a bit of lipstick and let it melt into a liquid:

When doing this, make sure that the lipstick does not start to bubble.  If this happens, ABORT MISSION!  Really.  Too much heat can set off a chemical reaction that will change the texture and even color of the lipstick.  If you're trying this for the first time, do so with lipsticks that you can afford to ruin.

If you want, at this point you can add in different colors, pigments or foundations to create a customized look.  Mix well with a spatula or craft stick.   Next, carefully pour the hot liquid into the pan and that's it!

Hey Koko!!

It depends on the company.  Some are 1 pan exactly and others are about 1.5.  I've started cutting the lipstick in half and just melting that.  The rest I put in the freezer until I'm ready to refill the pan.

Thank you for this post! It's nice to see the end result. I've been wanting to do this for a long time. Empty palettes are hard to come by where I live but since IMATS is coming up I'll look there and see what I can do. I have too many lipsticks that could do with going into a palette!

Great blog too!
