To help earthquake victims of Haiti...
Topic: Personal
The U.S. State Department has set up a hotline for information on family members who may be in Haiti: (888) 407.4747. This number is for information on U.S. citizens in Haiti only.
You can also text donations for Haiti relief from your cell phone. In addition to your donation amount, standard text messaging fees will apply.

Red Cross: Text HAITI to 90999 ($10 donation)
Yéle Haiti: Text YELE to 501501 ($5 donation)
United Way: Text HAITI to 864833 ($5 donation)
Intl Medical Corps: Text HAITI to 85944 ($10 donation)
I have heard of some folks taking advantage of the good will of others - before sending money anywhere, please verify the organization by visiting the websites of the U.S. State Department or the United Nations.  CNN also has a long list of reputable organizations.

Fix a broken laptop hinge or lid
Topic: Personal

Sometime late last night, my laptop had a date with destiny, or rather my cat.

The meeting was not kind.  My laptop, which has survived being stepped on in France, thrown down a trash shute in India and dropped in Japan, was no match for a 10 pound shelter cat.  And so my laptop, which was once so awesome was in two halves...she somehow managed to break the hinges of the screen. The lid was not able to stand up on its own and flopped back and forth.

So I thought...

I dug through the junk drawer (you must have one too) and pulled out ducttape, super glue, velcro and super putty.  Each caused disaster.  Going back through the drawer I found this thing and a heavenly host sang in approval:

Go ahead, be jealous of my MacGyverism.  Its a liiiiitle blingly, but much like Mister T in 1986, I think it works.  I know what you're thinking:

...and you'd be correct.

Today I cooked!
Topic: Personal
Yeah, today I actually cooked food.  This is a big deal as I never cook - I never learned how and never really wanted to. Anyway, I found something so easy to make, that even I couldn't screw it up: Shrimp on the Barbie!    Ok, now I know this isn't a big feast, but hey cooking = quantum physics for me so...yeah...

Tagged: 5 Random Things
Topic: Personal

I was tagged on youtube by the wonderful and outrageously awesome beauty guru, Iamgrape1119.  She's asked me to name 5 random things about myself.  I did this once in a video (since deleted), so I tried to find 5 new things I may not have shared - here goes!

1. I never leave the house without my passport.  Ever.  Just a thing.

2. I collect coins. I know.  BUT - I do not do it in a lame way.  I get coins from every country I go to and have them added to a bracelet :

See?  Not lame.  Also, I collect very old coins - here are two that I had bezeled - the first was minted by Phillp of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great) and the second by Constantine:

See?  Also, not lame.  No really!

3.  I love most animals more than I love many people. Tragic, I know.

4. Because of #3, I'm trying to go to church more often :p

5. When I was a kid, I was on a little league basketball team.  I sucked.

So that's it - those are my deep, dark secrets.  Please don't hold them against me!  You can find Tao on youtube or on her blog.

Fantastic News!
Topic: Personal

I told you I would let you all know either way and I'm happy to report that the news is good.  Yesterday afternoon I was offered a teaching position with my local college in the History department.  I'll start this January and while I'm nervous (even though it's only one class) I'm amazingly excited.  If everything goes well, I'll be able to teach a full load starting in the Fall.  I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon grinning wildly, but from here on out my concentration is focused on completing my thesis before January and preparing myself (and materials) for teaching.  Thank you so much for all the well wishes!

SCORE!
Topic: Personal

Awhile back I entered an online contest and I won this super cute wristlet from AbbaDabbaBags. Loves, loves, loves!!  This is just my style and I'm already using it for a makeup bag.

Winning this wristlet has been a spot of good news in my otherwise drab life.  Grad school continues to suck my soul from my very being and I haven't time to do anything other than thesis work.  To cheer myself up, in the wee hours of the morn, I've been watching Doctor Who episodes online. I strongly urge all of you to watch Season 3, Episode 10 "Blink" - it's pretty easy to find online and you can also downlod it from itunes if you want to watch it on your iPod.

Lastly, have you all heard about www.mediaconverter.org? Basically, it lets you download and reformat anything you can find on the web. For instance, if you need to make a word doc into a pdf, this is perfect Or...say...you find a video of an awesome song on youtube, this not only formats it into a video for your iPod, but ALSO allows you to save just the sound as an mp3!  I love it.

A quick update
Topic: Personal

This has been a remarkable week for me.  In addition to participating in what some have called the election of the century, I'm being considered for a teaching position at a local junior college.  For those who didn't follow my early youtube days, besides makeup, I love history and anthropology - I just live for it.  A long while back I applied for a teaching position, but just recently heard from the dean about an opening.  While I'm not quite sure what the end result will be,  I will say that I enjoyed the interview and it lit the flame within me to push on towards my goal.  My PhD is still many miles away yet, but now more than ever I know that I will get it (but first, I have to knock out this Masters by the Spring!)

And so, while I intended to keep this blog purely about makeup, this week has been something otherworldly for my country and for me personally.  Tomorrow I'll continue on with the reviews, but today, I just wanted to share.

Well...actually I do have a quick makeup update: The Sephora Friend's and Family sale has started.  Scroll down for the checkout code.

Uber FAIL!
Topic: Personal

For those who don't know - I've been on a no-buy since September.  In the makeup community, a no-buy is loosely defined as a time of no makeup purchases except for the basics: concealer, mascara and foundation.  It's a time to revisit your own makeup collection and actually USE what you have instead of just buying, buying, buying.

My hope was to be on the no-buy until November 5th, figuring that I would either shop in great happiness or great depression following the U.S. elections of November 4. It had been going well - no temptations - and then last night, for no reason at all, I just cracked....and I cracked in a big way...but gracious, it felt soooooo good.

Ok, I can't share what I purchased and to be honest, I can't even remember half of it.  I just kinda clickly, click, click, clicked my way across the internet, shopping madly. As punishment, I am not allowing myself to open anything until after November 5th.
