Face Atelier Lip Stick and Lip Glaze
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses
Last night, I went to an event downtown and wanted a lip color to really pop against darkened eyes.  I ended up mixing Face Atelier's Pink Sizzle Lipstick ($20) with MAC's  Pupple Matte Pigment (Free Sample) and topped it with a light coating of Face Atelier's Flamingo Lip Glaze to come up with this:

I'll try to recreate this color this afternoon and melt it into one pot.  I'm making two batches - one with the Lip Glaze and one without it.  I'm not sure how well the former is going to work out...

In other news, I've gone and picked up some Flawless Skin (by Prescriptives) powder for my kit as well some new pancake makeup from the local theatre supply store - I'm anxious to try it out.

A bit of randomness: my aunt is trying the Nutrisystem plan and I'm really proud of her.  I tasted the food the other day and, I have to say, its pretty good.  Looking at the caloric data on the back though, it seems that she's taking in dangerously low amounts - each meal is 110 - 200 calories with a snack of around 150.   Yikes! I eat more than that by lunch - granted I'm a weightlifter, but still...  anyone have any experience with this thing?

Shag Lipstick from MAC
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

While my cheeks are colorful playgrounds for cream blushers, shocking reds, Shimmerbricks and MSFs, I'm much more narrowed about what I use on my lips.  When you have Chicklets for teeth, you need to be careful and so there are precious few lipsticks that I dare touch.  For the most part, I'm a gloss woman.  On the rare instances that I do wear lipsticks, I need something long wearing and low maintenance.  I find everything I am looking for in MAC's shag.

Because the color is not terribly harsh, I can quickly reapply it without having to use a mirror or excuse myself to the bathroom.  It has just enough punch of color to make my lips noticable while not distracting from my eyes or cheeks.  Shag's color is buildable, and able to go from sheer to glam in a couple of applications.

If you are a lip pencil person, this goes beautifully with MAC's Cork - it holds the color in without giving you the outrageously tacky I'm-wearing-lip-liner-look.  For sure, Shag is a rebuy for me!

Review: MAC's Possum Nose Pink from Dame Edna
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

This is the only thing I purchased from the Dame Edna collection and I'm very pleased with it. It's a very fleshy deep pink color that leaves your lips looking like you've just had a slew of strawberries for lunch. It is very beautiful on highly pigmented lips, giving a very lovely, dewy finish. There is some obvious shimmer, so while I'll comfortably wear this during the day, I'm not sure that I have the cajones to wear it to the office. The texture is the standard MAC sticky which some hate. I am among them, but the color is so good that I'm willing to ignore it. Yeah, it's nice. I found the rest of the collection completely passable. The packaging is subpar - expect the glasses on the top to come off so if you really want to keep them, go over the sticker with clear nail polish or tape.

Lipstick: Mac Cremesheen in Dare You
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

Dear Matte-Red-Lipstick-That-I-Love,

Thank you for being so awesome!

It's Mac's Dare You (Cremesheen). I never buy Mac lippies, rather I only get from from B2Ming and every single time, I always let the MA working that day choose for me. It's my way of branching out and I feel like I don't lose anything since it's free. Anyway, this one, I love - so well done guy working behind the counter.

Lip of the Day: Darjeeling Lip Glass
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

I'll start off by admitting that I got Mac's Darjeeling Lip Glass just because of the name.  I've had it for some time now, but I hated the way it looked in the container and never reached for it. Lately I've been shopping my stash, that's is, looking in my current makeup collection instead of buying, and decided to give this a try last night. WHOA - I had no idea I would love it this much.  The saddest part?  It was a limited edition item - I'll never find it again once used up.

Best Potted Lip Gloss Ever
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

It's no secret that I hate potted lip products and only buy them if I expect spectacular results.  I find no joy in digging my groddy hands into a pot after I've been shaking hands, climbing stairs and typing all day.  And because I am a complete germaphobe I only use potted lippies when I'm at home and again just before I go to bed.  Recently, however, I found one that I'd be willing to take outside the house:

Archipelago's Grapefruit Lip Butter is amazingly smooth on the lips and is what a clear, moisturizing lip product should be. Retailing at $14, the product is absolutely worth several times that.  The first four ingredients are Macadamia Nut Oil, Beeswax, Grapeseed Oil and Grapefruit Oil - natural and all awesome.  I highly recommend this and suggest that you also be on the lookout for their tubed Grapfruit Lip Gloss - it has more of a traditional gloss texture with the same divine smell.

Review: Stila Lip Pot in Fraise
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

Billed as tinted lip balms, Stila lip pots continue to be a source of disappointment for me.  I find this product to be extremely drying, the complete opposite of what a balm is meant to do.  As for the color, what is lovely in the pot, is not nearly as lovely on the face.  I do expect to see some color from tinted lip balms, but even after several applications of fraise, I look more oily than rosy.   On the plus side, the container is lovely (the reason I got it actually) and the product does not have an overwhelming scent.

Stila is in the very poor business of discrediting their own line in terms of product (talking palettes?!?!) and discounters.  While you could pay $17 for this at Stila.com, you could also pay $15 for FIVE pots at Stila endorsed reseller beautycrunch.com.  Even more silly?  Stila allows their items to be resold at another major discounter, TJMaxx/Marshalls where you can pick up individual pots there for $3 - which is still too much for this item in my opinion.

Right now the only thing I do know is that I love the pot and I'm quite torn between using it up (which out to be pretty quick since I have to reapply it every 35 seconds) or just digging it out and saving myself from a bit of misery.

Review: Laura Mercier Lipstick in Fresh Brown
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

This was a freebie I got sometime ago, but tossed to the back of the lipstick drawer thinking that I'd EVENTUALLY get around to using it one day.  Yesterday was that day.  While frantically searching for something else, I pulled this out, popped the cap and found wonderful joy inside.

Laura Mercier's Lip Colour Shimmer line is full of moisturizing lipsticks with a small amount of light reflecting shimmer.  More than a stain, but less than a lipstick, this longwearing formula goes on more as a thick lipgloss that is glossy, but long wearing.  Laura Mercier's lip colours contain Vitamins A & E for anti-aging, line filling, moisturizing and conditioning effects.

Fresh Brown, in particular is a medium warm bronzy brown that will work for most skintones.  Brides, please be advised, this is a great color for your bridesmaids!

These lipsticks are $22 and are available at lauramercier.com and sephora.com.

Clinique Long Last Gloss Wear SPF 15
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

Earlier this year Clinique launched it's new line of Long Last Gloss Wear in 18 different shades.  These shades are spread out across 4 different color families: nudes, tawnies, pinks and violets each with options that run from sheer to full coverage. Clinique claims that this line is like a juice bar for your lips and indeed it is.  It remarkably moisturizing and that moisture stays thoughout the day.  Also, it is long lasting....somewhat....errr....Clinique claims that this will last up to 8 hours and on me it lasted about 4.  Now, I'm totally ok with that - 4 hour coverage with a gloss works for me, but just be advised that you might need a midday touchup.  In fact, I've never known anyone who has had it last the full 8 hours as Clinique states, but I've also never known anyone who didn't like this product.  That's how good it is - its only does half the job and folks still love it!

My favorite color from this line is Mystic  - it's one of the lightest in the Violet family.  Looking at the picture, it's the fourth one from the left. DO NOT BE ALARMED - I know it looks insanely purple, but it's one of the sheer ones and you really have to layer it on for it to be over the top.

Would I buy again?  Heck yeah and in a ton of different colors!  As with most of Clinique's products - their prices run lower than other comparable brands and this HUGE tube of gloss is only $14.  Remember, Clinique is the queen of GWP's so only buy this at GWP time OR at Sephora so you get the BI Points.  Enjoy!

Review: Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Ambre Rose
Topic: Lipsticks & Glosses

I have been in love with this Laura Mercier lip glace ($22) ever since I picked it up on the Youtube trip this summer.  The name describes the color perfectly - it's a great mix of coppery amber with a small hint of a rosy pink.   To put it into Mac terms - mix Coppering e/s with Antiqued e/s and make it into the smoothest gloss ever.

It has the shine of a gloss without looking greasy or messy.  Also, it's not sticky - the color just rests on your lips without moving.  Laura Mercier's lip glaces simply stay where they are meant to be.  They are long lasting without drying out your lips or enhancing those little lips lines that sometimes come out with long wearing colors.

This line carries a ton of colors, but not every Sephora carries the full range.  Having said that, you NEED at least two colors so be sure to shop around to find ones that work best for you.  Ambre Rose is my HG - get your own!
