Origins Modern Friction
Topic: Exfoliators

One of the workhorses in the Origins skincare line is Modern Friction and I've finally had a chance to give it a real try.  Retailing at $37.50 for a 4 oz jar, here's what you get:

Cons

  • The product is in a jar - not very sanitary.  You're forced to dig your hands in there before every use.  A tube similar to Clinique's 7 Day Scrub would have been better.
  • At 9.37 per oz, its not the cheapest option (but certainly not the most expensive - read my review of Dr. Brandt's exfoliator).
  • Much too harsh for sensitive skins, even when used wet.

Pros

  • It works wonderfully.  Old skin is sloughed away bringing fresh, bright skin to the surface.
  • The scent is just the most amazing mix of lemon and peppermint and I usually hate scented products!
  • It has just a touch of aloe to soothe any redness

All in all, this product is full of win.  It can be used every other day or every 3 days and I hope you give it a try!  If you have this, let me know what you think.

Biore Detoxify Daily Scrub
Topic: Exfoliators

Let's see...the pros:

  • Gently exfoliates
  • Oil free
  • Awesome fresh, crisp, scent
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Hypoallergenic
  • and cheap...really, really cheap

Cons:

  • Not.a.single.one.

This is a shockingly good drug store exfoliant that may well replace my normal department store brand.

It has large exfoliating particles that aren't harsh, but still somehow manage to slough off the dead skin.   It did not break me out, it did not dry me out...I just can't find anything bad to say about this...and I can always find something bad about something lol.

A huge thank you to the reader who recommended this - its just fantastic!

Dr. Brandt - Microdermabrasion Exfoliating Cream
Topic: Exfoliators

I think I may have found a new favorite exfoliator!  This cream uses "diamond shaped crystals" to gently exfoliate the skin.  While it sounds harsh, I actually find the product quite smooth on the skin. It didn't hurt (as some tend to do), but you could feel that your face was getting a good scrubbing. The box reads that it "reveals radiance" while "improving the skin's texture and I have to agree. Afterwards, my face looked like I had professional work done to it.   They claim that it is for use on all skin types, but when my mother used it, she found it a bit too stimulating.  To me, that means a 'no go' for folks with sensitive or delicate skins.

Active ingredients include lactic acid, jojoba, alone and green tea so be advised if you have any allergies to these products.  To use, just slather some on a damp face and make small circles for a couple of minutes, every 3 or 4 days.

This Dr. Brandt character is worth every penny!

Review: Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream
Topic: Exfoliators

Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream is one of two regular line Clinique exfoliators.  The more heavily pushed scrub, simply called "Clinique Exfoliating Scrub," is only intended for tough skins that can handle abuse.  Instead, I wish more counters would promote this - the 7 Day Scrub.   It has earned its name as it is gentle enough to be used every single day of the week.  I find that it gently removes old,  flaky skin and works well on dry, normal and oily skin types.  While I do like the original "Exfoliating Scrub," its not something I can use very often and I find myself instead reaching for the 7 Day version.

This super gentle product has no smell and is easily removed without having to scrape harshly across the delicate skin on your face (like common Apricot scrubs require).  Officially, Clinique claims that it "de-flakes, refines and helps minimize the appearance of fine lines." I don't know about that last part - its a bit of a stretch, BUT it does deflake and polish and I'm very happy with it.

The 7 Day Scrub Cream can be purchased at Sephora and Clinique at $17.50 for a 3.4 oz tube.  A little goes a long way and the tube will last you a good, long while. In my mind,  $17.50 is a small price to pay for a gentle exfoliant that actually works without causing damage.

Tomorrow, I'll discuss how NOT to be an April Fool when it comes to makeup!
