Depotting Lipsticks
Topic: As a Makeup Artist

Every so often I go on a depotting spree and last night was one of those times. Up for depotting this week were a few stray lipsticks.

First I started with a few basic supplies:

A candle, empty pans, an uber large ladle, a lighter, lipsticks, alcohol and towels.

I cleaned everything with 99% alcohol and rested the ladle over the burning candle.  Once hot, I cut off a bit of lipstick and let it melt into a liquid:

When doing this, make sure that the lipstick does not start to bubble.  If this happens, ABORT MISSION!  Really.  Too much heat can set off a chemical reaction that will change the texture and even color of the lipstick.  If you're trying this for the first time, do so with lipsticks that you can afford to ruin.

If you want, at this point you can add in different colors, pigments or foundations to create a customized look.  Mix well with a spatula or craft stick.   Next, carefully pour the hot liquid into the pan and that's it!

Awesome find at Rite Aid
Topic: As a Makeup Artist

I found these fantastic pockets at my local Rite Aid for a buck.  Yes, a dollar.   The outside is a black plastic case (read as: water resistant) and the inside has three clear pockets, perfect for seeing what you're storing.  I ended up buying 5 for my kit, one for my purse, 2 for my office and yet another for my sewing items.  Here you'll see part of my Eye Prep kit:

The outside pocket holds my liners, brow kit and TFSI.  The inside pocket (shown at an angle) holds paint pots, paints and other cream shadows.  The final/back pocket holds, 2 sets of tweezers, an eyelash curler and even more cream shadows.  This.thing.is.perfect.

A few pics from a recent shoot....
Topic: As a Makeup Artist

These are some behind the scene shots taken at the photoshoot from a couple of weeks ago:

The photographer, Sarah, did a great job of giving direction to get the perfect shot.  Here are some of the finished images:

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we had a blast at the shoot and the photos came out beautifully.  Thanks Sarah and Jacob!

RCMA Foundation Palette
Topic: As a Makeup Artist

I posted this under the 'Makeup Artist' grouping as this product is something most folks would have little use for - the RCMA Shinto Palette.

RCMA foundations are the real deal - they can be applied as is, or with water or glycerine to sheer it out a bit.  This is a highly (HIGHLY) pigmented line with professional grade products that can be used on stage, in print and on the big screen - it blows everything else I've used out of the water.  Each color provides about 12 faces of application and honestly, I couldn't be happier with it.

The Shinto is one of two RCMA palettes carried by Camera Ready. The other is the Ko Palette.  If you can only get one, Shinto, in my opinion, has the greatest mix of colors and will suit a wide range of clients.

If you have any questions about this palette just let me know - I love it!

Coming up next:

  • test looks
  • pictures from 2 scheduled photoshoots this week
  • review of a facial cleanser for dry skin

I hope you all are having a wonderful start to your week!

On being a makeup artist....
Topic: As a Makeup Artist

I wanted to write a short note about an awesome call I had a few hours ago.   JesMakeup - a great makeup artist and friend - called to bounce some ideas off of me for an upcoming shoot of hers.   As she was speaking, I (rudely) began to do the same and we spent the next hour and a half in the most wonderful conversation.  Back and forth our ideas were flung at each other with childlike excitment - each suggestion more fantastic than the last...it was simply amazing.

No matter who you are or what you do, it's always good to speak to someone as passionate as you are about what you love.  As I go to sleep tonight, my head is filled with wonderful ideas to share with my old photographers (and an awesome new one I hope to work with).  So huge "yay" for unexpected calls that bring awesomness!

On that note, good night guys and I wish you all a great week!
